The City of Ember

Author: Jeanne Duprau Rating: 9.2/10      This book was a bit of a break for me as it was slightly shorter than some other things I have read lately. It was interesting and there were very detailed descriptions of people and places. I appreciated that, because lots of information is much better than too little information. For me as a reader, I get extremely frustrated when the author expects me to just figure things out and deal with the fact that I don't have enough information. The story and plot of this book reminded me a lot of The Giver , with the way the jobs were chosen and the carefully regulated society. Personally, I thought that the society in  The Giver  was more carefully regulated, but I could see how there were a lot of rules in both societies.

The School for Good and Evil: The Last Ever After

Author: Soman Chainani Rating: 8.7/10      All the threads and missing pieces begin to come together in this book. The characters continue to develop, and other characters are introduced and flawlessly woven into the story. I personally liked the fresh perspective and new style of the third book, how it began with just two characters and the rest came in as the story went on.

The School for Good and Evil: A World Without Princes

Author: Soman Chainani Rating: 8/10      This book was a bit trickier to understand then the first one, even though the characters are not all new and I was not reading it for the first time. This book was also a little more on the side of pure fantasy than the first one, which in itself was probably 8 parts fantasy, 1 part realistic fiction. i still enjoyed the reading very much, and was just as shocked at the cliffhangers and plot twists as I was the first time.

The School for Good and Evil

Author: Soman Chainani Rating: 8.5/10      This happens to be one of my favorite series. About once every six weeks, I decide to re-read a series I really enjoy. This time, I chose the School for Good and Evil series. One of the main reasons I like this series is that it happens to be my favorite genre mishmash. I love reading books that have masterfully blended any combination of science fiction, fantasy, and realistic fiction. It gives the story depth and makes it interesting so that readers are inspired to keep going.

Out of Salem

Image
Author: Hal Schrieve Rating: 9.9/10      If I was to make a list of my favorite stand-alone books ever, Out of Salem  would quite possibly be in the top five. It is a rare kind of book that is powerful and moving on so many levels. Maybe one out of sixty books I read fits in this category. It is a truly amazing read and I think that if you have not read it you should.

Ender's Game

Image
Author: Orson Scott Card Rating: 9.3/10       Ender's Game  is an amazing example of science fiction. I found Ender's age to be slightly ridiculous, because, really, how is a six-year-old supposed to be the main character? Other than that, it was a truly spectacular book. Every detail was carefully crafted, form start to finish. It reminded me of some other science fiction stories I have read, but it is utterly unique in its own way.

The False Prince

Author: Jennifer A. Nielsen Rating: 8.7/10      I liked this book because it was a fantasy book that was different from the ones I usually read. A certain amount of information was kept from the reader, but it was done in a way that made me want to keep turning pages and finding out what would happen next. I love a good fantasy book that has mystery elements, so this book worked really well for me. If you don't enjoy not knowing things, this book will likely not be for you.
